Excel College in Ejigbo, Lagos State, has confirmed the authenticity of two viral videos depicting ex-students partaking in questionable activities within the school hostel. In an official statement released on Saturday, the school’s director, Dr Dele Oke, provided context for the incidents and outlined the disciplinary and corrective measures taken.
According to the statement, the first video was recorded on May 11th when a parent visited the hostel to celebrate her son’s final birthday in secondary school. The school clarified that the parent brought non-alcoholic wine and snacks, and the recording was made on her phone before being shared with a WhatsApp group.
The second incident, described as students experimenting with smoking in a game called “pass and puff,” occurred in April 2025 during holiday extension classes for recently graduated SS3 students.
Following an internal investigation, the school administration enacted several consequences:
- The involved students were expelled from the hostel and barred from the 2025 graduation ceremony.
- The students were later permitted to return and sit for their NECO exams only after expressing remorse and signing undertakings with their parents.
- The responsible Housemasters were sanctioned with warning letters and the forfeiture of their termly allowances for negligence.
To prevent future occurrences, the college has implemented significant reforms. These include relocating the SS3 common area to a more open and accessible space, increasing staff monitoring and surveillance, and reinforcing counselling sessions and strict adherence to visiting hours.
The school confirmed it is cooperating fully with inquiries from the Lagos State Government, including the Ministries of Education and Youth & Social Development, and the Lagos State Police Command, providing all necessary documents and witness accounts.
“We acknowledge the concerns of Nigerians in this matter and remain resolute in our commitment to maintain excellence with integrity, both in words and actions,” Dr. Oke stated.
