Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has expressed concern over the pace of Nigeria’s development under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the country has not advanced as much as expected.
Speaking during an interview on State Affairs, a podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, Fayemi said although some level of progress had been recorded, the growth remained too slow for a nation with Nigeria’s enormous potential and influence in Africa.
The former governor, who authored the book If This Giant Must Rise, stated that he still belongs to the APC but admitted he had hoped the party would deliver greater achievements by now.
According to him, Nigeria should already be moving faster in terms of governance, development and institutional reforms.
Fayemi said, “I am a member of the APC, but we are not progressing as much as I expected. It is not that there is no progress at all, but the pace is too slow for a country destined to lead Africa.”
His remarks come at a time when many Nigerians continue to debate the country’s economic direction, governance system and the ability of political leaders to address pressing national challenges.
The former Ekiti governor stressed that Nigeria must become more intentional in the way it manages its affairs and builds its institutions. He noted that nation-building is an ongoing process and no country is perfect, but leaders must remain committed to strengthening governance structures and improving citizens’ welfare.
Fayemi added that Nigeria’s large population, economic potential and strategic role in Africa place a major responsibility on its leaders to pursue reforms capable of driving sustainable growth and national unity.
He maintained that the country still has what it takes to become a leading force on the continent, but warned that such a goal can only be achieved through purposeful leadership, stronger institutions and deliberate planning.
