The Federal Government has commenced the prosecution of more than 400 terrorism suspects in a renewed effort to fast-track long-pending terrorism-related cases across the country.
The suspects were arraigned on Monday before various courts within the Federal High Court complex in Abuja, where they are facing charges ranging from terrorism and insurgency-related offences to aiding, abetting, and financing terrorist activities.
The prosecution is being led by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), alongside the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).
To ensure the smooth handling of the cases, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, constituted a special panel of judges to preside over the trials.
While the Federal Government is prosecuting the cases, legal representation for indigent defendants is being provided by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
The mass trials form part of the government’s broader strategy to accelerate the adjudication of terrorism-related cases that have experienced delays over the years. Unlike previous proceedings held at the military facility in Kainji, Niger State, the current trials are taking place in Abuja.
The initiative follows a similar exercise launched in April, when the Federal Government began prosecuting hundreds of terrorism suspects before different divisions of the Federal High Court in the nation’s capital.
According to Attorney General Fagbemi, the ongoing exercise involves approximately 500 suspects and is aimed at strengthening accountability and advancing the country’s counter-terrorism efforts through the judicial process.
