The Federal Ministry of Environment has identified blocked manholes, underground drainage channels and sewage-related issues as major factors that worsened the flash flooding recorded in parts of Abuja.

The ministry disclosed this in a technical report following an assessment of the flooding incident at Blantyre Crescent, Adetokunbo Ademola, Wuse II, on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The inspection was conducted on Monday, August 17, by a technical team from the Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, led by the department’s Director, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, following the directive of the Minister of Environment.

According to the report, heavy rainfall generated significant urban runoff, while blocked drainage inlets and restricted underground channels prevented stormwater from flowing away efficiently.

The ministry explained that silt, solid waste and debris found in several manholes and drainage inlets had obstructed water movement, causing the drainage network to become overwhelmed during the downpour.

It noted that the restricted drainage system resulted in water backing up and accumulating on the surface, thereby increasing the severity of the flooding.

The ministry also raised concerns over evidence of sewage-contaminated water in parts of Abuja City Centre.

It said the contamination might have resulted from faulty connections between drainage and sewage systems, drainage surcharge or inadequate maintenance of wastewater infrastructure.

The report recommended a detailed assessment of the affected networks to establish the source of the contamination and determine whether damaged or unauthorised connections were responsible.

The ministry said the incident at Blantyre Crescent highlighted a broader problem involving the maintenance of drainage infrastructure across the Federal Capital City.

It recommended the immediate clearing and desilting of affected manholes and underground drainage channels, alongside inspections of upstream and downstream sections to identify hidden blockages.

The report further called for a comprehensive assessment of underground stormwater infrastructure in Abuja City Centre, particularly locations that have experienced repeated flooding.

It proposed that key drainage facilities be inspected and desilted before each rainy season, with additional monitoring during periods of intense rainfall.

The ministry also recommended developing a digital register containing details of manholes, underground drainage networks, flood-prone areas and maintenance activities to improve the management of Abuja’s drainage system.

It urged the relevant FCT authorities and the Federal Ministry of Environment to conduct regular joint inspections of drainage infrastructure and maintenance operations.

The ministry stressed that emergency clearing operations alone would not adequately address Abuja’s recurring flooding, calling instead for a preventive and scheduled maintenance system.

It therefore sought approval to formally communicate its findings to the relevant FCT environmental and development authorities and secure urgent intervention at Blantyre Crescent.

The ministry also recommended establishing a comprehensive and verifiable routine maintenance programme for manholes and underground stormwater infrastructure throughout Abuja City Centre.

Members of the technical team included Bikani, who served as team lead, Engr. Attah Abdullahi, Engr. Feyisetan Ayomiposi and Engr. Isa Yahaya.
