The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the government, the holiday declaration reflects respect for the religious values and spiritual traditions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world observing the important Islamic festival.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful at home and in the diaspora, describing Eid-el-Kabir as a significant occasion centred on sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion towards humanity.
The Federal Government also urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and reflection, while seeking divine guidance for peace, security, and national progress in the country.
“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” the statement noted.
Meanwhile, the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed that adequate security measures have been put in place ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
In a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the command said the security arrangements are aimed at ensuring the safety of residents across the North-East during the festive period.
The task force added that intelligence reports revealed that remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists could attempt isolated attacks during the celebrations, prompting heightened security surveillance across the region.
