Mrs Helen Aisowieren, wife of the Edo Representative on the NDDC Board, has urged the Federal Government to enact stiffer laws to tackle the rising cases of domestic violence against women.
She recently revealed that the era of women getting relegated to the background is long over.
Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day celebration jointly organised by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Jesse Halliday Global Initiative in Benin, Edo, Helen said that the perception that females are the weaker gender cannot be allowed to linger when it is clear that women deserve their rightful place in society.
According to her, unless women are treated with the respect they deserve, the deprivation of their rights and privileges will continue.
She stated that domestic violence cannot be condoned for women because they are the mothers of the nation.
“Domestic violence against women should be prohibited, and the government must endeavour to enact stiffer laws to protect women in the country.
Women are mothers of the nation, and there is no justification for them to suffer any form of violation; such practices should attract appropriate sanctions,” she said.
Celebrating International Women’s Day, Helen disclosed that NDDC seized the perfect opportunity the day presented to train women on vocational skills and Artificial Intelligence.
She then appealed to the management of the NDDC to focus more on women in Edo, emphasising the urgent need for empowerment, training, and skills acquisition programmes.
Also speaking, Mrs Princess Ewere, President of Afemai Women in Politics, described the training programme as a thoughtful initiative, expressing confidence that the knowledge gained would make the women more productive.
“We truly commend the NDDC for sponsoring this programme, which will benefit our women across the Niger Delta region,” she added.
