A Greek F-4 Phantom military aircraft crashed on Saturday during an airshow at a military base outside Athens, according to the Greek news agency ANA.
The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately clear, while the condition and whereabouts of the two pilots on board remained unknown at the time of the report.
According to a journalist with Greece’s public broadcaster ERT who witnessed the incident, the aircraft had just taken off when it suddenly lost altitude before crashing.
The impact triggered an explosion in front of thousands of spectators attending the annual Athens Flying Week airshow.
A fire service helicopter was subsequently deployed to the scene to put out the fire caused by the crash, ERT reported.
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias also cancelled a planned visit to the Thessaloniki International Fair and travelled to the crash site following the incident.
Authorities were expected to investigate the cause of the crash and establish the fate of the two pilots.
