Management of the Ogun Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Igbesa has clarified that Sunday’s fire incident was not caused by a gas explosion, as widely reported on social media.
The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and China-Africa Investment FZC, which jointly manage the free trade zone, issued a statement on Monday confirming that the fire broke out at Good Mattress FZE, a company within the industrial park.
Mr Steve Makanjuola, signing on behalf of both organizations, said the zone’s internal fire service team quickly contained the blaze with assistance from the Ogun State Fire Service and other emergency responders.
The swift response prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring businesses and eliminated further risks within the zone.
“There were no casualties recorded, and the incident was effectively de-escalated before it could pose any wider risk,” the statement noted.
Videos circulating on social media had earlier shown thick black smoke and flames rising from the factory, causing panic among nearby residents. Some reports claimed the incident began with a gas explosion at a foam factory and spread to residential areas.
Management dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the fire remained within the affected facility and did not reach any residential neighborhoods. No lives were lost in the incident.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway, with management promising to release verified findings through official channels.
“Contrary to reports circulating online, the incident did not extend to any residential areas, nor was it a gas explosion. The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” the statement said.
OGFTZ management reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining full compliance with safety, legal, and regulatory standards at the facility.
