A fire incident on Wednesday affected a section of the wing housing the Senate at Nigeria’s National Assembly complex in Abuja, causing a brief disruption before being brought under control.
The incident occurred at Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, the nominee representing the North-East geopolitical zone on the commission’s board.
According to reports, the fire originated from the kitchen area attached to the hearing room. Prompt intervention by lawmakers and staff helped prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the facility.
Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were among those who reportedly took immediate action to contain the fire, assisting emergency responders in bringing the situation under control before significant damage could occur.
Preliminary findings suggest that the incident may have been caused by a microwave oven that was left switched on in the kitchen compartment.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were recorded. Following the successful containment of the fire, activities within the National Assembly resumed without major interruptions.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that committee officials instructed journalists present at the scene to delete photographs and video recordings taken during the incident.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess any damage caused to the affected section of the Senate wing.
