(Apples Bite Magazine) Rogo, Kano State – A devastating fire broke out at Rogo General Hospital on Friday morning, destroying significant portions of the healthcare facility and leaving the community without access to critical medical services.
The blaze, which authorities believe was triggered by a fault in the hospital’s solar power system, engulfed major sections of the building before firefighters arrived on scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick plumes of smoke rising above the hospital as flames rapidly spread through the structure.
The incident has created a healthcare crisis for residents of Rogo Local Government, who rely on the general hospital as their primary medical facility. With much of the infrastructure now damaged, including essential patient care areas, community members are expressing deep concern about where they will receive urgent medical attention.
Community Left Without Options
Amina, a pregnant woman who was receiving antenatal care at the facility, expressed her distress: “I do not know what to do now. This is where I make all my antenatal checks. This fire has to make me travel nearly one hour before reaching the next local government. I am in a delicate condition. This hospital was my only hope.”
Sani Shuaibu Rogo, a local elder, emphasized the urgency of the situation. “This place serves the whole local government, we don’t have another general hospital anywhere close,” he said. “The government must act fast. If they delay, lives will be in danger because people have nowhere else to go.”
Hauwa Belli, who had brought her sick child for treatment, arrived to find firefighters battling the flames. “This hospital has saved many lives in this town,” she said. “Now that major parts are destroyed, where do we run to? We are begging the government to rebuild it immediately.”
Calls for Immediate Government Response
Community members and hospital staff are urgently appealing to the Kano State Government and relevant agencies to expedite reconstruction efforts and implement enhanced safety measures at the facility. They stress that the hospital provides vital services to thousands of residents who have few alternative healthcare options, particularly given that primary healthcare centers in the area offer limited services.
At the time of this report, no official statement had been released regarding casualties or the full extent of property damage caused by the fire.
