Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON, MBBS, has issued a moving tribute to former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on the 15th anniversary of his passing, remembering him as “one of Nigeria’s finest leaders” whose legacy continues to resonate across the nation.
In a statement released on his official Instagram account, Dr. Saraki, who served as the 13th President of the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2019, reflected on his personal relationship with the late president and the enduring impact of Yar’Adua’s leadership style.
“Fifteen years on, Nigeria still mourns one of its finest — and I still remember a friend whose quiet wisdom helped shape my understanding of service,” Saraki wrote. “President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua led with conviction, not commotion. He listened more than he spoke — and when he did speak, it was with purpose, not politics.”
The former Senate President emphasised Yar’Adua’s approach to governance, noting that his leadership exemplified duty, humility, and justice rather than the pursuit of power. Saraki’s tribute highlighted how Yar’Adua’s principled stance on transparency and governance continues to serve as a model for Nigerian politicians today.
Yar’Adua, who served as President of Nigeria from 2007 until his death in 2010, was widely respected for his integrity. Before ascending to the presidency, he served two terms as Governor of Katsina State from 1999 to 2007, where he became the first Nigerian governor to publicly declare his assets, setting a precedent for transparency in public office.
As Katsina governor, Yar’Adua prioritised education, constructing numerous schools throughout the state while maintaining an efficient public administration with remarkably low levels of corruption. Under his leadership, Katsina became the fifth northern Nigerian state to adopt Sharia law.
Though his presidential election in 2007 was controversial and contested by opposition figures, including Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar, Yar’Adua’s subsequent administration was marked by his commitment to the rule of law and institutional reforms.
Saraki concluded his tribute with a prayer: “May Almighty Allah (SWT) continue to grant him a place among the righteous in Al Jannah Firdaus. Ameen.”
Political analysts note that tributes like Saraki’s reflect Yar’Adua’s enduring legacy as a leader whose brief presidency continues to be remembered for its commitment to democratic principles and good governance.
