Funke Akindele has achieved a historic milestone as her latest film, Behind The Scenes, crossed ₦2 billion at the box office, making it the first Nigerian production to reach this figure.
The record-breaking achievement was announced by FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s distributor, on Monday. According to their statement on X, the movie has earned total ticket sales of ₦2,103,039,706.
FilmOne described the accomplishment as unprecedented, confirming that Behind The Scenes is now Africa’s highest-grossing Nollywood film. The movie has also become the top-earning Nollywood release in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The distributor praised Akindele as West Africa’s highest-grossing writer, director, and producer. She has made history as the first African filmmaker to top the continental box office for three consecutive years.
Behind The Scenes features an ensemble cast including Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, and Kamo State.
The film tackles the concept of “black tax”—the financial and emotional burden of supporting extended family members—a theme that has strongly connected with African audiences.
FilmOne attributed the movie’s success to its relatable storytelling, talented cast, strategic marketing, and Akindele’s widespread appeal. The film previously crossed ₦1 billion before climbing to ₦1.77 billion.
This latest success adds to Akindele’s impressive track record, including her previous hit Everybody Loves Jenifa, which also set box office records and solidified her position as Nollywood’s most commercially successful filmmaker.
