The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for fostering a business-friendly environment that enabled the landmark partnership between Hypercity and global retail giant Carrefour.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the franchise signing ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, Gbajabiamila described the deal as a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s economy and its investment potential.
He specifically commended Wike for playing a key role in facilitating the agreement, describing him as a strategic thinker whose pro-business policies are delivering visible results in the nation’s capital. According to him, the successful collaboration reflects the FCT administration’s commitment to transforming Abuja’s economic and physical landscape.
Gbajabiamila noted that although the initiative is starting in Abuja, it represents a broader opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its position as a leading investment destination in Africa. He added that the development could spark a retail revolution across the country, with plans already in motion to expand into major cities such as Lagos.
He emphasized that Abuja is laying the foundation for a nationwide transformation in the retail sector, expressing confidence that the project will grow beyond the capital and create widespread economic impact.
The Chief of Staff also used the occasion to encourage international investors to see Nigeria as more than just a market, urging them to consider it a stable and reliable destination for long-term partnerships.
In his remarks, Hypercity Managing Director, Sunny Chuwla, described the partnership as a major boost for Nigeria’s economy. He said it would attract significant investment, create jobs, and open up more opportunities for local suppliers and producers.
Chuwla revealed plans to open new stores in Abuja and other key cities, noting that the collaboration is designed to modernize the retail sector while supporting local businesses. He described the agreement as the beginning of a long-term vision to merge global retail standards with local enterprise.
He added that Nigeria has already demonstrated strong market potential, citing the company’s growth since launching its first store in Port Harcourt in 2022. According to him, the partnership marks a transition from observing the Nigerian market to actively investing and expanding within it.
As part of the expansion strategy, existing stores in Port Harcourt will be rebranded under the Carrefour name, with further growth expected in cities like Lagos.
The initiative positions Abuja as an emerging retail hub and showcases Nigeria’s stability and potential to the global business community.
