A fire outbreak destroyed 10 shops at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex in Ogunpa Market, Ibadan, late Monday evening, according to Oyo State fire officials.
Mr. Moroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the incident in a statement released Tuesday. He said emergency responders received an alert at 8:11 p.m. Monday from the Baale of Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal.
Firefighters arrived to find 10 shops already consumed by flames among the rows of market stalls. The team quickly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent shops and surrounding properties. The Federal Fire Service provided backup support in extinguishing the fire.
According to Akinwande, the fire started when a shop occupant refueled a generator while it was still running. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported.
Police officers from Iyaganku Police Headquarters assisted by maintaining security at the scene. Akinwande commended the collaborative response that helped minimize damage from what could have been a more devastating incident.
