The Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has said that there are no threats to worry President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He recently shared that many of those forming a coalition against the present government did not even participate in the struggle to aid democracy in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on the Channels Television Politics Today program on Friday evening, Uba Sani revealed that because Tinubu’s opponents are not popular for fighting to drive democracy across the country, they are not a credible opposition.
According to him, he spent most of his life as a civil rights activist who constantly fought for the enthronement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria, unlike the politicians forming coalitions without doing anything tangible for the people they want to rule.
“Asiwaju has no threats, and I will tell you why. Because you see, I told you I spent most of my life as a civil rights activist. We fought for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, for good governance. Most of the people speaking today, where were they? When we were in the trenches, fighting for democracy, for justice, for good governance, for the rule of law, they didn’t know anything about it,” he said.
He further addressed accusations that the Independent National Electoral Commission is intentionally blocking the registration of new political parties, stressing that members of the coalition only want to grab power, unlike him and Gani Fawehinmi, who worked tirelessly to expand the political space to aid the growth of smaller parties.
He concluded by saying that some of the hard-fought political battles he participated in in the past led to the emergence of the Labour Party today.
“There’s a way to fight. When we did that fight under our leader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi of blessed memory, you know what happened? We were not fighting because we wanted power.
We were fighting because we wanted democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
That was the reason why when Abdulsalam Abubakar started his transition, remember, and he insisted that he would register only three political parties, the Alliance for Democracy, the APP, and the PDP, we went with our team, and our leader Chief Gani Fawehinmi, told us we were not going to participate in that election.
And we looked at him, we said, why? He said because the battle is not over. We have to fight for the expansion of political space in Nigeria.
And that was the reason why some of us, including my humble self, took INEC to court.
So when people are talking about denial of registration or whatever, I was surprised. Where were they? In 2000, in 1999, we took INEC to court.
We won this case at the level of the Supreme Court, for the expansion of political space.
That is the reason why today you have the Labour Party, all those parties; some people fought that battle,” he added.
