President Donald Trump has said that the United States is set to send more weapons to Ukraine.
His statement has triggered Russian criticism after Moscow announced new gains amid its lingering war against its neighbour.
A day after Trump’s vow to send additional weapons for Ukraine to defend itself, the Kremlin said that the U.S. sending arms to Ukraine will only prolong the conflict between the countries.
Quoted by Russian news agencies, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov revealed that such a decision does not align with America’s peaceful resolution posture during the war.
“It is obvious of course that these actions probably do not align with attempts to promote a peaceful resolution,” he said.
Donald Trump’s announcement to send weapons to Ukraine is coming after Washington declared that it was halting some weapons shipments to Kyiv last week, leaving Ukrainian officials caught off guard and seeking further clarity.
Pausing the shipment of weapons poses a major challenge for Kyiv, a city that is currently contending with some of Russia’s largest missile and drone attacks.
Reacting, Trump disclosed that the United States would have to send weapons to the country, especially defensive weapons that can help Ukraine protect itself.
Speaking to journalists at the White House, the President said that Ukraine is getting hit on a daily basis, and he is not particularly happy with Vladimir Putin at the moment.
“We’re going to have to send more weapons — defensive weapons primarily.
They’re getting hit very, very hard,” he said.
Reports have said that America is set to immediately send 10 Patriot interceptors — anti-missile systems — to Ukraine.
Russian President Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has shown no signs of wanting to end the conflict despite pressure from Trump.
Trump’s vow to ship more arms to Ukraine follows Moscow’s announcement that its forces recently captured its first village in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region after advancing towards it for months.
Russia launched a new large-scale drone and missile barrage before the announcement, including on Ukraine’s military recruitment centers.
Kyiv has since said it also carried out a drone attack on a Russian ammunition factory in the Moscow region.
