Jason Arday, who made history as the youngest Black professor ever appointed at the University of Cambridge, has been found dead at his home in London.
The 41-year-old former professor of sociology of education was found unresponsive by emergency workers in Battersea, South London, on Friday, August 14, 2026. Police say his death is unexpected but not being treated as suspicious.
His death comes just a week after he resigned from Cambridge following weeks of intense public scrutiny over allegations of academic dishonesty.
Arday’s rise to prominence in 2023 as Cambridge’s youngest Black professor drew widespread admiration. According to his university biography, he was diagnosed with global development delay as a child, did not speak until age 11, and could not read or write until he was 18 — yet went on to earn a PhD and build a distinguished academic career.
That story unravelled in recent weeks after critics and fellow academics accused him of plagiarizing sections of his PhD thesis, completed at Liverpool John Moores University, along with other published research. Journalists also began questioning some of his personal achievements, including claims that he ran 600 miles in six days for charity and raised over £5 million for philanthropic causes.
Liverpool John Moores University cleared him of official wrongdoing, but Cambridge launched an independent review into his hiring process and credentials. Hours after the review was announced, Arday resigned from his position on August 5.
In his resignation letter to colleagues, he denied the plagiarism allegations but admitted to errors in his work, saying the media attention and public backlash had pushed him to “the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure.”
The London Ambulance Service alerted police to his home at 3:12 p.m. on Friday, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cambridge Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, said the university was “desperately saddened” by the news and extended condolences to his family and friends. Police are supporting the family as a file is prepared for the coroner.
