Joke Silva Talks Why She Didn't Take Olu Jacobs Name Despite Marriage

In a candid revelation that offers rare insight into one of Nigeria’s most respected celebrity marriages, veteran actress Joke Silva has shared how a crucial piece of advice from her husband, legendary actor Olu Jacobs, helped cement her professional identity in the entertainment industry.

During her appearance on Stephen Akintayo’s Leadership podcast, the 63-year-old entertainment icon disclosed that retaining her maiden name after marriage was a deliberate decision guided by her husband’s remarkable foresight about brand identity in the entertainment business.

“He was the one who advised that I do not change my name,” Silva revealed during the interview. “Because he understood the importance of branding, he explained that my brand had already begun establishing itself before our paths crossed, and altering that identity could potentially derail the professional momentum I had worked so hard to build.”

This strategic decision proved prescient as “Joke Silva” continued to flourish as her professional identity, while in their personal circles, everyone recognised her as Mrs. Jacobs. “We maintained Joke Silva as the brand, yet within our social and family circles, there wasn’t a single person who didn’t know I was Mrs. Jacobs,” she explained.

The respected actress also opened up about the initial challenges they navigated due to their significant age difference of nearly two decades. Silva was just 24 when they married in 1985, while Jacobs was approximately 19-20 years her senior. When asked about embracing such an age gap, she responded with disarming simplicity: “I was in love with him. It’s as straightforward as that. He was simply a very gorgeous person.”

Silva recounted how their relationship began during a formative period in her acting journey when she sought professional guidance. Jacobs, already an established figure in Nigerian cinema, didn’t just offer career advice but encouraged her to pursue formal training in dramatic arts—a recommendation that proved pivotal to her development as an actress.

Their relationship faced some initial hesitation from Silva’s father, who expressed concerns about the age difference. However, her mother proved more accepting, perhaps because her own parents had navigated a similar age gap successfully. Family support eventually came from unexpected quarters when Silva’s sister, Toyin Olawoye, recognised Jacobs’ potential as a life partner. Silva fondly recalled a pivotal moment in 1984 when her sister pulled her aside and declared, “Joke, this is the man to take to Daddy.”

Throughout the interview, Silva’s admiration for her husband’s vision and unwavering support was evident. She credited his guidance as instrumental in helping her successfully balance the demands of personal life with the pressures of a high-profile entertainment career—creating a partnership that has become one of the most respected and enduring in Nigerian entertainment history.
