The Kano State Government has earmarked ₦1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme involving 3,000 beneficiaries.
Commander-General of the state’s Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on preparations for the event.
He said the funds would cover furniture, food items, dowry, clothing for the couples, and a ₦100,000 capital grant for each bride, among other costs under the scheme.
“The Kano State Government is to spend ₦1.5bn on the entire mass wedding programme which will soon be conducted in the state,” Daurawa said.
He added that the board, working with the State Ministry of Health, had begun medical screening for intending couples to determine their health status, covering hepatitis, pregnancy, HIV, genotype, and other sexually transmitted infections.
According to Daurawa, 5,000 people applied for the programme, from which 3,000 will be selected following the screening exercise. He commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the initiative and said the governor would announce the date for the ceremony.
The medical screening began on Monday, May 8, 2026, covering couples from 24 of the state’s 44 local government areas.
