The Kano State Government has unveiled plans to establish a state-owned commercial airline aimed at creating employment opportunities for trained indigenous pilots and boosting the state’s aviation sector.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed the initiative during the 40th Kano State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Kano.
According to the governor, the proposed airline is expected to begin operations within the next year and will serve as a platform for professionally trained Kano pilots who are yet to secure employment in the aviation industry.
A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the project forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to empower youths, reduce unemployment, and strengthen the state’s economy.
Speaking during the meeting, Governor Yusuf said the government was committed to ensuring the successful launch of the airline.
“By the grace of God, the proposed Kano Airline is expected to commence operations within the next one year,” he said.
The governor noted that the airline would primarily provide career opportunities for Kano indigenes who have completed professional pilot training but remain unemployed.
Yusuf also praised the performance of Kano-sponsored pilots who received aviation training in Jordan under a previous administration, describing their achievements as a source of pride for the state.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the aviation sector by ensuring that trained professionals are given opportunities to utilize their skills and contribute to Kano’s economic growth.
During the meeting, the governor received several awards, including recognition from the Kano State Pilot Association for his support in advancing the careers of local pilots.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Kano State Pilot Association, Naziru Ibrahim, commended Governor Yusuf for assisting members of the association in renewing their flying licences, describing the intervention as a significant boost to their professional careers.
Ibrahim appealed to the governor to provide additional support to help pilots obtain their final certifications, noting that doing so would qualify them to operate commercial flights within Nigeria and pursue opportunities with international airlines.
The association expressed confidence that the planned Kano-owned airline would expand employment opportunities for trained pilots while contributing to the growth of the aviation industry in the state.
