Commuters travelling along the Iyana-Ipaja/Iyana-Iba axis of Lagos have been left stranded after commercial bus drivers operating on the route withdrew their services.
The drivers reportedly embarked on the strike to protest what they described as persistent extortion by law enforcement officers and transport regulatory agencies.
The affected drivers accused the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), popularly known as agberos, of repeatedly demanding money from them.
Some drivers who spoke about the situation said the alleged extortion had become increasingly frequent and was making their business operations difficult.
According to the drivers, LASTMA officials often impound their vehicles, sometimes keeping them for an entire day. They said such actions result in the loss of their daily income and add to the financial burden of operating commercial buses.
The drivers maintained that the continued deductions and alleged harassment had made it difficult for them to make reasonable profits.
They said the strike was intended to draw the attention of the relevant authorities to their concerns and seek an end to what they described as excessive extortion.
The withdrawal of the buses has, however, created difficulties for commuters along the busy route, with passengers reportedly struggling to find alternative means of transportation.
