The Lagos State Government has taken a significant stride in easing the financial burden on healthcare providers and the public by subsidizing the costs associated with screening blood products. Dr. Bodunrin Oshikomaiya, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, announced this initiative during a Stakeholders’ Engagement meeting.
Dr. Oshikomaiya highlighted the impact of current economic realities, which led to an increase in screening fees from 5,000 naira to 8,000 naira per unit. To address this, the agency proposed a revised total access fee of 13,500 naira, up from 7,000 naira. Understanding the economic challenges prompting this adjustment, Dr. Oshikomaiya revealed that the State Government has approved a subsidy of N6,500 per unit of blood available for transfusion. This subsidy aims to ensure easier access to life-saving blood for all residents, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
