The Lagos State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to transforming environmental issues into economic opportunities. This comes as the state finalizes preparations for the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation.”
Speaking at a recent press briefing at the Eko Atlantic Corporate Office, Victoria Island, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that Lagos State is ready to spearhead Africa’s green transformation.
Highlighting the state’s many investments in coastal defences, flood mitigation systems, renewable energy, urban greening, and circular economy projects, he disclosed that Lagos has become a role model for climate resilience and sustainability across Africa.
“Africa is not waiting to be rescued — we are ready to lead,” he said.
The upcoming Lagos International Climate Change Summit will unite subnational governments, global institutions, investors, scientists, and innovators to deliver actionable and bankable solutions for the continent’s environmental and coastal challenges.
The summit will shed light on fresh financing models within the Blue Economy, a framework that aids the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic development, an enhanced standard of living, and ecosystem preservation.
Tokunbo Wahab attended the press briefing alongside the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Permanent Secretaries, heads of agencies, and senior officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
“Together, we are shaping a Lagos that not only adapts to change but leads it,” Wahab declared, confirming the government’s readiness to make Lagos the climate action capital of Africa.
He concluded by saying that the summit will offer a strategic platform for partnership, innovation and investment that will fast-track the transition towards a sustainable and resilient Lagos State.
The Lagos International Climate Change Summit is a yearly flagship event organized by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, uniting policy leaders, researchers, and innovators to address key environmental issues confronting Lagos and the African continent.
2025’s edition will concentrate on leveraging ocean-based economies and climate financing to improve coastal resilience, guarantee green employment, and promote low-carbon urban growth.
