Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy announced.
The honour will be conferred during the Special Merit Awards Ceremony on January 31, 2026, one day ahead of the main Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles. Joining Fela in this year’s class of honourees are Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, Paul Simon, and Carlos Santana.
According to the Recording Academy, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognises performers whose creative contributions have made outstanding artistic impact on recorded music. The accolade is frequently awarded posthumously.
Although Fela never received a Grammy during his lifetime, his global influence has expanded significantly since his passing in 1997. His 1976 masterpiece Zombie was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, becoming one of the few African albums to earn this distinction.
Responding to that earlier recognition, his son Femi Kuti called it an affirmation of his father’s enduring legacy, emphasising how Fela’s music continues to resonate across generations and borders.
Fela is credited as the originator of Afrobeat, fusing jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional African sounds into a revolutionary genre. He was equally renowned for his fearless critique of government corruption, military oppression, and social inequality—messages woven throughout his artistic output.
Almost 30 years since his death, Fela’s cultural footprint endures through annual tributes like Felabration in Lagos, global exhibitions and stage productions, and the ongoing relevance of his music in discussions about art, activism, and resistance.
This Lifetime Achievement Award positions Fela Kuti alongside an elite roster of music pioneers honored for their lasting contributions to the industry, further solidifying his place as one of Africa’s most transformative cultural figures.
