The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has called for a comprehensive investigation into a deadly clash involving suspected illegal miners in Randagi community, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The appeal follows reports by BBC Hausa that several people were feared killed during the violence. However, authorities had not officially confirmed the number of casualties as of the time this report was filed.
In a statement issued by its chairman, Dr. Isah Muhammad, BEPU expressed sympathy to the people of Randagi and families of those believed to have lost their loved ones. The union also wished those injured a quick recovery.
BEPU urged security agencies and relevant authorities to conduct a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation to determine what led to the violence and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted in line with the law.
The union also called on the Federal Government, the Kaduna State Government, and mining regulatory bodies to strengthen monitoring of mining activities in Birnin Gwari. It noted that although mining contributes to economic growth, operations must comply with safety, environmental, and legal regulations.
According to BEPU, residents have repeatedly complained about the destruction of farmlands and public infrastructure, as well as the alleged use of hazardous chemicals near water sources during mineral processing. The group warned that such practices could threaten public health, agriculture, and the environment if left unchecked.
The union further lamented that communities hosting mining activities have not enjoyed adequate benefits from the mineral resources extracted from their land. It urged authorities to ensure mining development translates into improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, clean water supply, and employment opportunities for local residents.
BEPU appealed to residents of Randagi and the wider Birnin Gwari Emirate to remain calm and cooperate with investigators while reaffirming its commitment to working with government agencies, traditional rulers, security operatives, and other stakeholders to promote peace, responsible mining, and sustainable development in the area.
