Argentine President Javier Milei has strongly criticised the United Nations, describing the global body as a “useless organisation” and accusing its officials of arrogance and failing to fulfil its core responsibilities.
Milei made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing the UN, where he questioned the organisation’s effectiveness in maintaining international peace and protecting human rights.
The Argentine leader accused the UN of allowing “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to grow instead of ensuring collective security.
He said the organisation had become an institution that, in his view, mainly supported bureaucrats who were disconnected from the problems facing the world.
Milei also criticised the UN over the long-running dispute between Argentina and Britain over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.
Argentina claims sovereignty over the islands, which remain a British overseas territory. The two countries fought a war over the territory in 1982.
Milei accused the UN of failing to properly address Argentina’s position and alleged that Britain had ignored a UN resolution calling on both sides to avoid unilateral actions concerning the islands.
“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” Milei said.
The Argentine president has repeatedly criticised international institutions and global governance during his appearances at the UN, while also expressing opposition to what he describes as a “woke” global agenda.
Milei has maintained close relations with United States President Donald Trump, one of his key international allies.
On Wednesday, Argentina and the United States also announced a joint infrastructure initiative aimed at connecting Argentina’s economic sectors with major Atlantic ports and Western markets.
The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is expected to promote investment in transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including Argentina’s Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon reserves.
