The family of late Nollywood actor and comedian, John Ikechukwu Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, has appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance, revealing that they have been struggling to survive since the veteran actor’s death.
The appeal was made during a recent visit by popular content creator King Mitchy, where the family opened up about the difficult conditions they have been facing.
According to the family, Mr Ibu’s only daughter and two sons have been forced to stop attending school because their school fees remain unpaid.
The children’s mother also disclosed that the family has been living without electricity and running water for several weeks due to financial hardship. She explained that they now depend on a nearby well for water after failing to pay their utility bills and house rent.
She said the family has been without electricity for over two months, making life increasingly difficult as they have to look for places outside their home to charge their mobile phones.
Mr Ibu’s daughter emotionally appealed to Nigerians, especially her late father’s friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry, to come to their aid.
She praised her mother for doing everything possible to care for the family despite the challenges, saying she had struggled to provide food, pay school fees, and keep the children happy. She urged those who worked alongside her father during his lifetime to remember the family in their time of need.
The children’s mother further revealed that the school recently contacted her again over the outstanding tuition fees, raising fears that the children may remain out of school if help does not come soon.
Mr Ibu battled serious health complications before his death. In November 2023, one of his legs was amputated following an illness that required multiple surgeries.
The beloved comic actor died on March 2, 2024, in Lagos after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 62 years old and remains one of Nollywood’s most celebrated comedians, remembered for his remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s film industry.
