Popular Nigerian actor and skit maker, Debo Adedayo, has condemned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over a controversial statement directed at a Channels Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye.
The backlash follows comments made during an episode of Politics Today on Channels Television, where Okinbaloye expressed concern about Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. He warned that the country’s democracy could be at risk if opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fail to present a strong challenge.
Okinbaloye noted that a competitive electoral process is essential for a healthy democracy, stressing that the absence of viable opposition could undermine the credibility of the elections.
In response, Wike, during a media chat in Abuja, accused the journalist of taking sides in the internal crisis affecting the ADC. His reaction sparked outrage after he suggested, during the live broadcast, that he could have responded more aggressively to such comments.
Reacting via his social media platform, Mr Macaroni criticised the minister’s remarks, describing them as dangerous and unacceptable. He expressed concern over what he called the growing trend of public officials making threatening statements without facing consequences.
He stated that it was troubling for a serving government official to make such comments about a journalist, warning that such rhetoric reflects a deeper issue of accountability and respect for democratic values in the country.
