The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two manufacturing facilities in Ogun State for allegedly producing banned sachet alcoholic drinks and alcohol packaged in 100ml bottles.
The enforcement action is part of the agency’s ongoing implementation of the Federal Government’s directive prohibiting the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and containers smaller than 200ml, a policy introduced to curb alcohol abuse and protect public health.
The affected factories are Nigerian Distillers Limited, located along Km 14, Idiroko Road, Iju-Ota, and Intercontinental Distillers Limited, situated at Km 11, Idiroko Road, Ota, Ogun State.
Speaking during the operation, NAFDAC’s Assistant Director of the Water and Drinks Division, Olakunle Ojo, said the companies were found to be producing alcoholic beverages in prohibited sachets and 100ml containers, contrary to existing government regulations.
Ojo explained that the restriction was introduced because small-sized alcohol packages are easily accessible to minors and are frequently misused by commercial and private vehicle drivers, increasing the risk of road accidents and other health-related problems.
He noted that manufacturers are only permitted to produce alcoholic beverages in containers of 200ml and above, in line with the Federal Government’s alcohol control policy.
According to him, one of the factories was discovered after information obtained from a distributor led NAFDAC officials to the production site during an investigation.
The agency warned that it would continue nationwide enforcement against manufacturers, distributors, and retailers who violate the directive, stressing that offenders would face appropriate regulatory sanctions.
Ojo urged industry operators to comply fully with the ban, emphasizing that the policy is aimed at protecting public health, especially among young people, while reducing alcohol-related road accidents.
The latest operation is part of NAFDAC’s broader campaign to enforce regulations governing the production, distribution, and sale of alcoholic beverages across Nigeria.
