American engineer and educator Nathan Thomas made history after becoming the world’s youngest professor at the age of 18, breaking a record that had stood for more than 300 years.
Thomas was appointed as a faculty member at Miami Dade College in August 2023 when he was just 18 years and 346 days old. His appointment saw him surpass the long-standing record held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at 19 in 1717. The achievement also placed Thomas 16 days younger than American engineer Alia Sabur, who became the world’s youngest female professor in 2008.
His academic journey began far earlier than most. At just 10 years old, Thomas enrolled in Miami Dade College through a dual-enrollment programme before moving to Florida International University at the age of 14.
By the time he turned 18, he had earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering with honours. Instead of beginning college like many of his peers, Thomas returned to Miami Dade College as a lecturer, teaching students who were often close to his age.
Speaking about instructing classmates and older students, Thomas said age has never been an obstacle in the classroom because everyone shares the same goal of learning. He added that his priority is to teach effectively and support students who are committed to their studies.
Thomas credits his passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to his parents, who are both engineers. According to him, teaching has deepened his understanding of engineering concepts and given him satisfaction whenever students grasp difficult ideas.
Despite his remarkable achievements in academia, Thomas continues to pursue higher education. He is currently studying for a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law, where he is expected to graduate in 2028. Alongside his legal studies, he continues to teach online and hopes to build a career in intellectual property law, focusing on STEM-related innovations.
Outside academics, Thomas enjoys basketball, tennis and golf. He is also a fan of the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots and plays classical piano, although he says he often listens to Drake, EDM and house music during his leisure time.
Reflecting on his extraordinary journey, Thomas encouraged young people not to compare their progress with others. He believes everyone has a unique path and that consistency, dedication and patience eventually lead to success.
