The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, and the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Adewale Ajayi, have taken significant steps toward the creation of a new state by establishing separate implementation committees, which are set to merge in the coming weeks.
The Awujale’s committee, chaired by Chief Chris Olufunmilola Okunowo, comprises nine distinguished members including Senator Gbenga Kaka and several prominent Otunbas. Their mandate includes advocating for a new state to be carved out from the current Ogun East Senatorial District, which encompasses nine local government areas.
Similarly, the Akarigbo has appointed a ten-member committee led by Aare Kola Oyefeso. Both committees are tasked with exploring the viability of the new state and developing strategies for gaining constitutional approval.
The proposed state would incorporate the entire Ogun East Senatorial District, including Sagamu, Ikenne, Remo North, Odogbolu, Ijebu Ode, Ijebu North East, Ijebu East, Ijebu North, and Ogun Waterside local government areas. Ijebu Ode is emerging as the likely capital due to its central location within the proposed territory.
The committees’ responsibilities include public advocacy, community engagement, and securing necessary endorsements from various stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. An inaugural meeting of the Awujale’s committee was held in Ijebu Ode on February 9, 2025, with Senator Gbenga Daniel in attendance.
A joint session of both committees is scheduled for the coming week to harmonize their proposals and address any outstanding issues, as the region anticipates the final outcome of this historic initiative.
