The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Customs Administration of the Republic of Benin have reinforced their collaboration by adopting geospatial technology to improve border security, enhance surveillance, and promote legitimate cross-border trade along the Seme-Krake corridor.
The renewed partnership was showcased during a meeting at the ECOWAS Conference Hall, Seme-Krake Joint Border Post, where officials from both countries discussed strategies for strengthening border management through modern technology.
Speaking at the event, the Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, described the initiative as a major step toward improving border operations, facilitating trade, and addressing security concerns along one of West Africa’s busiest trade routes.
He noted that the introduction of geospatial technology would equip Customs officers with improved intelligence and operational tools to combat smuggling and other trans-border crimes more effectively.
Also addressing participants, the Head of Geospatial at the Nigeria Customs Service, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Labaran Ahmed, explained that the project will pilot the Service’s border management application using the World Customs Organisation (WCO) satellite platform.
According to Ahmed, the technology will enable Customs authorities to identify vulnerable areas along the border, allowing for the strategic deployment of officers to high-risk locations for targeted enforcement operations.
He added that the initiative is expected to improve border surveillance, strengthen economic security, and support smoother trade between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin while enhancing regional cooperation in border management.
