Nigeria and Türkiye have committed to accelerating cooperation across trade, energy, and defence sectors aimed at creating jobs and boosting investment in both nations.
President Bola Tinubu announced this on Tuesday through his official X account during his State Visit to Ankara, Türkiye.
Following extensive discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Tinubu said both countries are focused on strengthening bilateral ties that deliver concrete economic gains for their citizens.
“President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and I reaffirmed our shared ambition, which speaks directly to jobs, investment and opportunity for our people,” Tinubu stated.
The leaders agreed to expand trade between the two nations and eliminate obstacles hindering business growth.
“We are creating a clear pathway to a five-billion-dollar trade volume between Nigeria and Türkiye,” the President revealed.
Tinubu characterized the discussions as pragmatic and future-oriented, guided by common interests and joint regional responsibilities.
“Our conversations were practical and forward-looking: trade and investment, energy, education, defence cooperation, peace and security,” he explained.
A Joint Economy and Trade Committee has been established to implement the agreements and encourage new investments.
“The creation of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee will unlock new flows of capital,” Tinubu said.
According to him, the committee will support industrial development, technology transfer, and enhanced private-sector engagement.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for President Erdoğan’s recognition of Nigeria’s reform efforts, particularly in energy and investment.
“I welcome President Erdoğan’s recognition of Nigeria’s reform momentum, particularly in the energy sector,” he noted.
The President said this renewed confidence demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to transparency, stability, and sustainable development.
“We are determined to build an economy that works for everyone, including the most vulnerable,” Tinubu emphasized.
Addressing regional security concerns, Tinubu restated Nigeria’s commitment to advancing peace and stability throughout Africa.
“Nigeria will continue to play its role in peace and stability in Africa,” he declared.
He noted that Türkiye’s proficiency in counter-terrorism and defence will enhance collaborative efforts against security challenges.
“Türkiye’s experience and readiness to cooperate in training, intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism strengthen our resolve,” Tinubu said.
Nine bilateral agreements were signed following the meetings, covering defence, education, media cooperation, diaspora affairs, trade facilitation, social development, and institutional partnerships.
“Nigeria remains open for serious partnership. Open to trade without barriers, ideas, skills and investment that create value and shared prosperity,” the President affirmed.
Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to inclusive economic growth, peaceful coexistence, and active participation in global affairs.
“We are building an inclusive economy. We are strengthening peace. Nigeria will continue to engage the world with confidence and clarity,” he concluded.
