Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai, working alongside the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), have successfully carried out a coordinated airstrike on a terrorist stronghold in Borno State, killing 21 suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The operation took place on May 30 in Arege, located in Kukawa Local Government Area, following extensive intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance activities that confirmed the presence of insurgents in the area.
Security sources disclosed that the targeted camp was being used by the terrorists to coordinate operations and plan attacks across communities within the Lake Chad region. Acting on the intelligence, Nigerian and U.S. forces launched a precision strike aimed at disrupting the group’s activities and weakening its operational network.
According to reports, the airstrike successfully eliminated 21 suspected militants and significantly damaged the group’s ability to carry out future attacks.
A security source described the mission as a carefully planned and intelligence-driven operation designed to maximize impact against terrorist elements while ensuring precision targeting.
The latest strike is part of ongoing joint efforts between Nigeria and the United States to dismantle terrorist networks, destroy insurgent hideouts, and restrict the movement of militants across the North-East.
Military officials noted that the operation highlights the growing security cooperation between Nigeria and its international partners in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
The successful mission is expected to further weaken insurgent activities in the Lake Chad Basin, a region that has continued to witness attempts by terrorist groups to regroup and launch attacks on vulnerable communities.
