Latest data from Nigeria’s hospitality sector reveals the states with the highest number of registered hotels and accommodation facilities in 2026. The rankings reflect economic strength, population movement, governance activities, and tourism appeal across different regions.

Top 10 States With the Highest Number of Hotels

1. Lagos State (1,788 Hotels)
Lagos remains Nigeria’s leading hospitality destination, with the largest concentration of hotels. Its mix of luxury, mid-range, and budget accommodations continues to grow, driven by its role as the country’s commercial nerve centre and a key entry point for international travellers.

2. Oyo State (1,031 Hotels)
Oyo State ranks second, with Ibadan serving as a major hub for commerce and transportation. The city features a blend of long-standing hotels and newer boutique establishments, especially in highbrow areas.

3. Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) – 963 Hotels
Abuja’s position is largely due to its status as Nigeria’s capital. The city has a strong presence of upscale hotels that cater to government officials, diplomats, and business visitors.

4. Delta State (817 Hotels)
Delta State’s hospitality sector is anchored by Asaba and Warri. Asaba’s strategic location as a gateway between regions has encouraged steady investment in hotels.

5. Anambra State (746 Hotels)
Anambra’s high number of hotels is linked to its vibrant commercial centres, particularly Onitsha and Nnewi. Business activities in these cities drive strong demand for accommodation.

6. Edo State (723 Hotels)
Edo State benefits from its central location, with Benin City acting as a major transit point. This has supported the growth of hotels catering to both travellers and business visitors.

7. Osun State (697 Hotels)
Osun’s ranking is influenced by tourism and education. Attractions like cultural heritage sites and academic institutions continue to draw visitors, increasing demand for hotels.

8. Ogun State (648 Hotels)
Ogun has seen rapid expansion in hotel development, especially in towns close to Lagos. Industrial activities and large religious gatherings contribute significantly to its hospitality growth.

9. Rivers State (612 Hotels)
Rivers State, led by Port Harcourt, has a strong hotel market driven by the oil and gas sector. Corporate travel plays a major role in sustaining demand.

10. Akwa Ibom State (589 Hotels)
Akwa Ibom completes the list, with Uyo gaining popularity as a destination for conferences and leisure travel, supported by ongoing infrastructure development.

Factors Behind the Growth

Several factors explain the high concentration of hotels in these states:

  • Business and industry: Economic hubs naturally attract more visitors and hotel investments.
  • Government activities: Capitals and administrative centres require accommodation for officials and guests.
  • Proximity to major cities: States near Lagos benefit from spillover demand.
  • Transport links: Strategic locations increase the need for transit lodging.
  • Tourism and events: Cultural, religious, and corporate events boost occupancy and expansion.

These states continue to lead Nigeria’s hospitality industry, offering a wide range of accommodation options for both business and leisure travellers.
