2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has said that Nigeria can earn more revenue from agriculture than from crude oil. He recently revealed that it is very much possible if Nigeria commits to purposeful leadership, investment and value-chain development.

The conference brought together leaders in development, agribusiness, and sustainability, including Sahel Consulting Chairman, Mezue Nwuneli; ONE Campaign CEO and keynote speaker, Ndidi Nwuneli; Inga Stefanowicz, Head of Section, Green Economy, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS; Michael Ojo, Country Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN); Dr Hussaini Abdu, Country Director, CARE International; Lekan Tobe, Country Director, Heifer International; and Oladoyin Olawaiye, Deputy Country Director, GIZ.

Speaking in Abuja while speaking at the Sahel Food Systems Changemakers Conference 2025, organised by Sahel Consulting with the theme “Designing for Legacy: Building Resilient and Impact-Driven Food Systems,” Obi lamented the country’s widespread hunger despite being blessed with vast land and lots of human capital.

According to him, it is simply unacceptable that Nigerians still go to bed hungry in a country that should be capable of feeding itself and others.

Citing Bangladesh as an example, he stated that the Asian nation, with a land area of about 148,600 square kilometres – roughly the size of Niger and Borno states combined – produces almost ten times more rice than Nigeria.

“No Nigerian should go to bed hungry. Nigeria, blessed with vast arable land and human capital, should not be listed among the hungriest countries in the world. Instead, we should be self-sufficient and exporting.

This reality reflects our misplaced priorities. It is not a lack of capacity, but a lack of commitment and leadership focus,” he said.

The former Anambra State Governor also visited exhibition stands featuring innovative agri-businesses, including AACE Foods, SEM Food and Prices, Dmore Foods, and CHC Agritech Africa, hailing the entrepreneurs for their resilience and contribution to national development.

Obi concluded by saying that with the right policies and an enabling environment, agriculture can surpass oil as Nigeria’s major source of income.

“It is time for Nigeria to realise that we can earn more from agriculture than from oil. For Nigeria to rise, we must move from consumption to production, from dependency to productivity, and from rhetoric to action.

Our farmers, entrepreneurs, and innovators are ready. The government must simply create the enabling environment for our youths and for our nation. A new Nigeria is possible,” he added

The Presidency has dismissed the political strength of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that President Bola Tinubu is no longer under any threat from the former Labour Party presidential candidate. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, made the remarks during an appearance on the *Mic On Podcast*, where he defended the Tinubu administration against criticisms from the opposition. According to Dare, while Obi may have posed a significant political challenge in the past, the current administration believes its achievements have strengthened President Tinubu’s position ahead of future elections. He also rejected calls by Obi for President Tinubu to resign, arguing that such demands have no constitutional basis. “The government is not afraid of Peter Obi. Just as he has the right to ask President Tinubu to resign, the government also has the right to tell him that the President will not resign because there is no basis for such a demand,” Dare said. He stressed that Nigeria operates a constitutional presidential system with elections held every four years, adding that the proper avenue for seeking political change is through the ballot box. Dare maintained that the administration has made measurable progress in addressing the country's challenges, insisting that its performance has earned it public confidence. According to him, the government has successfully confronted critical national issues and remains focused on delivering its mandate rather than being distracted by opposition rhetoric. The presidential aide further claimed that Obi no longer represents the political force he once did, stating that the President now stands on a stronger political footing because of his administration’s record. He concluded by expressing confidence that Obi would be unable to repeat his 2023 electoral success over Tinubu in Lagos State. “Peter Obi was a threat before, but today he is no longer a threat because we stand on the solid ground of performance. We have been able to interrogate the problems of this country. Peter Obi will not defeat President Tinubu in Lagos again,” Dare declared.
