Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has named celebrated Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie as his Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy, tapping into her massive public appeal to bridge the gap between the state government and its citizens.
The appointment was confirmed in an official statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, with the administration citing a desire to harness the influence of credible public figures in driving its governance agenda.
Johnson-Okojie is one of Nigeria’s most recognisable faces, having built a film career spanning nearly two decades and more than two hundred screen appearances. Her work has earned her multiple accolades, including recognition at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Away from the screen, the actress has carved out a reputation as a committed philanthropist through the Mercy Johnson Okojie Foundation, championing causes around women’s empowerment, child welfare, education, healthcare, and community development — experience that the state government says makes her well-suited for the advocacy role.
In her new capacity, she is expected to deepen public participation in government programmes, improve communication between the administration and ordinary Edo residents, and leverage her grassroots connections to bring more citizens into the policy conversation.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration described the appointment as a reflection of its commitment to inclusive and innovative governance, arguing that integrating influential public voices into policy advocacy will strengthen public trust and improve service delivery across the state.
