NSCDC Boss, Audi Abubakar Constitues High-Powered Probe Into Deaths of Suspected Illegal Miners in Niger State

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) under the has moved swiftly to address mounting concerns over the deaths of suspected illegal miners arrested during enforcement operations in Niger State, with Commandant General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, OFR, mni, on the approval of the Honourable Minister for Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has ordered the constitution of a high-powered investigative panel to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The deaths occurred following coordinated operations conducted by the Niger State Command on September 15 and 16, 2026, targeting illegal mining activities along the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis, a region long identified as a hotspot for unregulated mineral extraction that threatens Nigeria’s natural resource base and national security.

The operations formed part of the Corps’ broader mandate to combat illegal mining, an enterprise that has cost Nigeria billions in lost revenue and fueled environmental degradation across mineral-rich states. However, the deaths of suspects in custody have raised serious questions about detention conditions, access to medical care, and the treatment of persons arrested during enforcement actions.

In response, Prof. Audi has directed the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation to lead a comprehensive inquiry. He has also ordered the Commandant to step down from his position and report back immediately to the National Headquarters in Abuja for questioning while a new commandant has been appointed to steer and manage the situation pending the outcome of the panel’s investigation. The panel will examine the condition of the suspects at the point of arrest, the duration and conditions of their detention, the medical attention or lack thereof, provided to them and any other circumstances that may have contributed to the deaths.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, where medical examinations are being conducted to determine the actual cause of death. The Corps confirmed it is collaborating with relevant health authorities and sister security agencies to ensure appropriate medical and public-health measures are implemented.

Crucially, the NSCDC has pushed back against early speculation linking the deaths to a specific disease, stating that such reports “remain subject to medical and laboratory confirmation.” The Corps emphasized it will “refrain from speculation until the outcome of the medical examination is established”, a position that underscores a commitment to evidence-based findings over premature conclusions.

The Commandant General has issued a direct directive that the health and welfare of all persons currently in custody be given “utmost priority,” while measures are being taken to protect personnel who may have had contact with the affected persons. This dual directive reflects an awareness of both the humanitarian obligations owed to detainees and the occupational safety concerns facing officers.

The Corps extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring them that the circumstances surrounding the incident “will be thoroughly investigated and appropriately addressed based on established facts.”

While reaffirming its resolve to combat illegal mining and protect Nigeria’s critical national assets, the NSCDC also restated its commitment to “upholding the dignity, safety and fundamental rights of every person in its custody”, a balancing act that lies at the heart of lawful enforcement.
