The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has conducted a 10-kilometre fitness walk for its personnel as part of efforts to prepare for the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, held on Saturday in Abuja, involved officers from the command headquarters, area commands and divisional offices across the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, said physical fitness was essential for security personnel to effectively perform their duties, including chasing criminals, responding to emergencies and protecting lives, property and critical national infrastructure.
Odumosu explained that as a paramilitary organisation, the NSCDC required personnel to remain physically fit, strong and ready to respond to security threats at all times.
He stressed that officers who lacked physical fitness might struggle to pursue suspects or respond effectively to emergencies during operations.
According to him, the command would sustain the fitness exercise to improve personnel’s physical condition and ensure they were adequately prepared for security responsibilities before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
The commandant expressed confidence in the readiness of the FCT Command to carry out its responsibilities during the electoral period.
He said the command was committed to fulfilling its mandate and ensuring that personnel remained prepared to handle any assignment that might arise.
Odumosu added that the officers who participated in the exercise demonstrated high morale and readiness to deliver on their duties.
He also warned personnel against engaging in partisan political activities, urging them to remain politically neutral and professional throughout the election period.
The commandant assured residents that the NSCDC would provide security before, during and after the elections, with particular attention to protecting citizens and critical national assets from possible threats.
The 10-kilometre fitness walk started at the FCT Command headquarters and passed through Berger, Wuye, Finance Bridge, Zone 3 and Wuse Market before returning to the starting point.
Participants included area commanders, divisional officers, heads of departments and unit heads from across the territory.
Beyond preparations for the elections, Odumosu disclosed that the command had intensified security patrols across the FCT to combat vandalism and other criminal activities.
He said the patrols covered all six area councils of the territory and were conducted round the clock, extending beyond the Abuja city centre.
According to him, NSCDC personnel had arrested suspected vandals in different locations, including Kubwa and the central area of Abuja.
Odumosu said the arrests demonstrated the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities and strengthening security across the territory.
He maintained that the NSCDC would continue its 24-hour patrols until criminal activities were significantly reduced throughout the FCT.
The commandant added that security operations would not be restricted to the metropolis, as officers were also deployed to communities across the six area councils.
Meanwhile, the Director of Protocol at the National Defence College, Abuja, Dr Emmanuel Unuakpor, who also spoke after the exercise, said regular physical exercise could improve the fitness of security personnel and strengthen their ability to carry out operational duties effectively.
The NSCDC said the exercise formed part of its broader efforts to maintain operational readiness and ensure effective security coverage during the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
