Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has hit back at those circulating a fake letter claiming he wrote about his own imminent death, dismissing the document as deliberate misinformation and asserting that he remains in robust health at 89.
Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at a public colloquium organised to mark his 89th birthday. The gathering, themed “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World,” drew scholars, politicians, and dignitaries for a broad conversation on leadership and governance across the continent.
Addressing the viral document that has been making the rounds online, the former military ruler and two-term civilian president laid the blame squarely on what he called “never-do-well” elements bent on sowing confusion. He said the letter falsely portrayed him as preparing Nigerians for his death — a claim he rejected outright as pure fabrication.
The elder statesman was blunt in his response to those wishing him gone, declaring in characteristic fashion that they were simply wasting their time. Using the popular Nigerian expression “I dey kampe” meaning he is strong and very much alive — Obasanjo said God still has work for him to do on this earth, and warned that those peddling falsehood would ultimately answer for it.
