The Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared an indefinite strike, citing unpaid wage arrears, poor working conditions, and the state government’s repeated failure to honour previous agreements.
The strike action, which commenced on Monday, was the outcome of a resolution reached during the General Parliament of Ogun State Civil/Public Service Workers, held at the Arcade Ground in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
In a joint statement signed by the State NLC Chairman, Comrade Hameed-Benco Ademola, and the State Secretary, Comrade Christian Omoneh, all public sector workers in the state have been instructed to down tools immediately and refrain from any official duties until further notice.
“All workers are hereby directed to withdraw their services from the Ogun State Government until they are otherwise notified,” the statement read.
The union warned of disciplinary measures for any worker who defies the strike order. It also called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently open a line of dialogue with labour representatives to address the mounting grievances of the state workforce.
“The government must, as soon as possible, call for dialogue. We shall continue to keep you updated on further developments. A workforce united can never be defeated. Solidarity forever,” the statement added.
The NLC leadership had in recent times voiced strong concerns over what it described as ongoing neglect by the state government, particularly regarding salary backlogs, unfavourable working conditions, and failure to implement previously negotiated agreements.
The strike action has since drawn the attention of labour stakeholders and civil society groups, who are urging both parties to resume negotiations in the interest of industrial peace and the uninterrupted delivery of public services across Ogun State.
