The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has directed that alcoholic beverages should no longer be brought into his palace, describing such drinks as harmful to health and unsuitable gifts for him or other elderly people.
The monarch made the announcement in a video shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, where he urged visitors to stop presenting alcoholic drinks during palace visits.
According to the traditional ruler, beverages such as gin, schnapps and other spirits, which are often offered as gifts during traditional engagements, pose serious health risks to elderly individuals.
Oba Akanbi stressed that his palace would no longer accept alcoholic drinks and warned that anyone bringing Hennessy or similar beverages should reconsider, insisting that he prefers gifts that promote his health and wellbeing.
The monarch revealed that he recently learned some visitors had brought Hennessy to the palace, urging them not to repeat the gesture in future.
He further maintained that alcohol was never part of the original cultural practices of the Yoruba people and advised elders to stay away from habits that could endanger their health.
Speaking on the issue, the Oluwo said:
“The so-called alcohol usually presented or reserved for the elders is detrimental to their health; it leads to death.
“Anyone who brings hot drinks to the king’s palace wants to eliminate the king. Gin and schnapps reserved for the elderly should not be brought to my palace because what they call alcohol for the elderly was made by Western people to destroy internal organs. It will render the kidneys useless.
“I heard you brought Hennessy; don’t bring it here. You want to kill me. Anyone who brings Hennessy or other dangerous alcoholic drinks has the intention of killing me. If I drink an entire bottle, what will I use to pray?” he asked.
