The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the August 15 Osun State governorship election, Bola Oyebamiji, has accepted the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke the winner.
Adeleke secured victory in the election, paving the way for him to serve a second term in office.
Although Oyebamiji said the APC had hoped for a different result, he stated that he respected INEC’s decision and backed the party’s ongoing review of the election outcome.
He made this known in a statement shared on X on Tuesday while addressing APC members, supporters and leaders across the state.
“Although we had hoped for a different outcome in the election, in the meantime, we respect the position of the electoral umpire, and I totally support the decision of our party in its ongoing review of the outcome of the election,” Oyebamiji said.
The APC candidate expressed appreciation to voters, party leaders, members and campaign volunteers who supported his candidacy, saying he remained grateful for their confidence in the alternative vision presented during the campaign.
He stressed that the conclusion of the election should not end efforts to promote development in Osun State.
According to him, the values and issues championed during the campaign would remain relevant beyond the election.
“The campaign has come to an end, and the election is over, but the values and causes we championed are alive. We would continue to work for effective, inclusive and rapid development of our dear Osun,” he stated.
Oyebamiji, however, raised concerns over alleged attacks and hostility against APC members and supporters following the election.
He called on the Osun State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to take immediate steps to prevent further violence.
“At the same time, I wish to alert the State Government and security agents to the growing trend of hostility and violence against our members and supporters,” he said.
Oyebamiji alleged that incidents of violence witnessed against APC members during the build-up to the election had intensified within 24 hours of the poll.
He urged security agencies to intervene promptly and bring the situation under control.
“Consequently, I urge the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intervene and arrest this ugly trend without delay,” he added.
The APC candidate also appealed to his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding as the state moves into the post-election period.
He thanked party members and supporters for their commitment throughout the campaign and said he remained proud of the efforts made during the election.
