The Osun State Police Command has invited Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, for questioning over an alleged statement in which he appeared to urge supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to “kill” members of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The invitation followed the circulation of a video on social media showing the senator speaking in Yoruba during an APC campaign rally in Ilesa on Tuesday, where he allegedly made the controversial remark.

In a letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner of Police, Elections, Osun State, Samuel Etaifo Erale, the police asked Fadahunsi to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo to explain the circumstances surrounding the statement.

According to the police, the invitation was based on information alleging that the senator made comments considered “threatening, inciting and intimidating” during the campaign.

The command also noted that the alleged statement had been widely circulated across electronic and social media platforms.

Senator explains controversial remark

Following the backlash generated by the video, Fadahunsi’s team said the senator’s words had been taken out of context and misinterpreted.

In a statement titled “Kill Osun Accord with Votes, Not Violence,” the senator’s team explained that he was using political language to urge APC supporters to defeat the Accord Party through the ballot box rather than through violence.

The statement described the remark as “purely political and metaphorical,” stressing that Fadahunsi did not intend to encourage physical attacks against members or supporters of the rival party.

It said the senator was instead calling on APC supporters to “overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party at the ballot box through lawful, peaceful and democratic means” during Saturday’s governorship election.

The controversy comes as political activities intensify across Osun State ahead of the August 15 poll.

Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, while the APC is campaigning to take control of the state.

Adeleke has repeatedly accused APC supporters of using thugs to attack members of his party during the campaign, allegations the APC has rejected.

The police invitation has further heightened concerns over inflammatory statements and potential violence as political parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the election.

Authorities have repeatedly urged politicians, supporters and other stakeholders to avoid provocative statements and conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the election.
