Tension has engulfed Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom State following the death of a 12-year-old JSS2 student, Ufokobong Edwin Godwin, who reportedly succumbed to injuries linked to alleged bullying by a senior student.
The tragic incident is said to have stemmed from a dispute over food items during the school’s terminal examinations before the Easter break. According to sources, the deceased allegedly refused to share his provisions with a final-year (SS3) student, which reportedly triggered a violent confrontation.
A student who shared a hostel with the victim recounted that the senior student allegedly attacked the boy, repeatedly hitting him on the neck until he lost consciousness multiple times before other students intervened.
The victim was later taken to the hospital after sustaining a neck injury. Although he regained consciousness and was returned to school, his parents were reportedly not informed of the severity of the incident before he was taken home for the holidays.
While at home, the boy began to experience intense neck pain, repeatedly crying out in distress. His parents initially administered pain relief medication, unaware of the underlying severity of his condition. As his condition worsened, he was rushed to the hospital, where he died on Easter Sunday.
Medical reports later indicated that his death was caused by complications arising from blood clots around the neck area.
The school principal, Mr. Jude Ezeogu, confirmed the incident, describing it as deeply unfortunate and stating that the school community is mourning. He added that the management would convene to review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased has called on the Federal Government to launch a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
The father of the late student, who spoke briefly, appealed for government intervention, saying he would provide further details at the appropriate time.
As of press time, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Timfon John, said she would verify the incident but had yet to issue an official statement.
