Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has been cleared by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party’s only presidential aspirant ahead of its upcoming primary election.
Obi arrived at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday evening alongside the senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh.
He was screened by the NDC national screening committee led by former Minister of Education, Sam Egwu.
Speaking after the screening, Egwu said the committee was satisfied with Obi’s performance and confirmed that he met all constitutional and electoral requirements needed to participate in the party’s presidential primary.
According to him, Obi provided satisfactory answers to questions raised by members of the panel and was officially cleared to contest in the 2027 presidential election primaries of the party.
Following the screening, the committee presented Obi with an official clearance certificate and the party’s nomination form numbered 001.
Obi had earlier obtained the NDC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms on May 17, which was initially the deadline for the purchase of forms.
Meanwhile, the NDC extended the deadline for other aspirants seeking different elective positions to May 24 to allow more interested members to obtain forms.
The party also announced that the submission of completed nomination forms by screened aspirants will begin on May 20 and end on May 26.
However, the party clarified that the deadline for presidential nomination forms would not be extended, noting that the process had already closed.
