Kenyan lawyer and public intellectual Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba walked off the stage during a public address in Kisumu after his presentation was interrupted to allow the formal reception of Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o.

Lumumba was speaking at the 18th edition of the TICH Annual Scientific Congress 2026, where he addressed challenges confronting Africa’s medical research sector, when proceedings paused after the governor arrived.

A video circulating on social media captured Lumumba questioning the decision to interrupt an ongoing intellectual discussion because a political leader had arrived.

“And that is part of the African problem. I’m being stopped because the governor is coming. What is important, is it what we are saying or the governor is coming?” Lumumba said.

Although he initially appeared prepared to suspend his presentation, the interruption prompted him to criticise what he described as an excessive culture of deference to political leaders.

“The governor knew we had a meeting. He chose to come to interrupt, and we are here celebrating,” he said before leaving the stage.

The incident has sparked debate on social media, with some users applauding Lumumba for challenging what they saw as an unnecessary prioritisation of political protocol over an ongoing discussion.

X user @WycOdiwuor praised the renowned public speaker, writing: “Well done PLO! We must stop this madness of obsession with power & ascribing respect where none has been earned.”
Another user, @Eleweka777, said the organisers, rather than Governor Nyong’o should bear responsibility for the disruption.
“PLO’s frustration is understandable. But the failure may lie less with Governor Nyong’o than with the organisers who interrupted substance to perform protocol,” the user wrote.

Similarly, @bunnyvicoz supported Lumumba’s position, arguing that similar practices occur at religious gatherings.

“The same things happen in our churches. We need to stop this nonsense,” the user wrote.

Lumumba, who is widely recognised for his forceful oratory and Pan-African perspectives, has spoken extensively across Africa on governance, leadership, constitutionalism and the continent’s development.

The Kisumu incident has consequently revived discussions about political protocol, respect for public officials and whether such courtesies should take precedence over scheduled intellectual and professional engagements.
