Police in Anambra State have arrested members of a criminal gang responsible for attacking the convoy of former Labour Minister, Senator Chris Ngige, with two suspects killed during an intense gun battle with security operatives.
The Anambra State Police Command described the successful operation as a major breakthrough in efforts to combat crime and protect residents across the state.
Police spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga revealed that officers from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu set up an ambush at Enugwu Agidi junction following intelligence reports about a five-man gang operating in the area.
The suspects, identified as armed robbers and cultists with connections to a banned secessionist group, opened fire on police officers when confronted, leading to a fierce exchange that lasted approximately two hours.
Two gang members died from gunshot wounds during the confrontation, while three others fled the scene with injuries. Security forces recovered significant evidence including one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of ammunition, 15 live cartridges, criminal charms, a cult red beret, and a black Toyota Highlander.
Before dying, one suspect confessed to participating in the earlier attack on Senator Ngige’s convoy. He also admitted being part of the Vikings confraternity strike squad, claiming the group was on a revenge mission after a rival cult killed one of their members.
Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu praised the officers for their bravery and ordered intensified efforts to capture the fleeing suspects. He also directed medical facilities to report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
