Street-pop artiste Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has apologised to fans, organisers and supporters after pulling out of his celebrity boxing rematch against Nollywood actor Charles Okocha, an action that led to his disqualification.
The controversial bout, held on Friday night, ended abruptly after Portable walked out before the conclusion of the opening round. Although he later returned to the ring, officials ruled him disqualified and awarded victory to Okocha.
In a statement released on Saturday through his management, Zeh Nation/Dr Zeh, the singer expressed regret over the incident and apologised to everyone affected by the outcome.
The management acknowledged that the decision disappointed fans and organisers but appealed for understanding, noting that emotions ran high during the contest.
“We sincerely apologise to the organisers, Balmoral Group, the entire event team, our fans, friends, family, and everyone who came out to support Portable at the celebrity boxing event,” the statement said.
It added that while the outcome had sparked criticism, the singer’s decision should be respected.
“We understand the disappointment caused by the outcome of the fight and by Portable’s decision to step away after the first round. While emotions can run high in moments like these, we respectfully ask everyone to respect his decision and perspective.”
The management accepted responsibility for the controversy, assuring supporters that lessons had been learnt from the incident.
“On behalf of Portable’s management, we take full responsibility for the disappointment this may have caused. We remain grateful for the unwavering love and support shown to him throughout this journey.”
The team also appreciated Balmoral Group for organising the event despite its dramatic ending.
“We appreciate Balmoral Group and everyone involved for putting together a great event, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
According to the statement, Portable is determined to improve in future appearances.
“We have taken note of the feedback, and we are committed to learning from this experience. We promise to come back stronger and do better next time.”
Earlier on Saturday, Portable explained that he abandoned the fight because Okocha allegedly bit and choked him during the contest, claiming the encounter had turned into a wrestling match rather than a boxing bout.
Despite his explanation, officials upheld the disqualification, handing Charles Okocha victory in the highly publicised celebrity rematch.
