President Bola Tinubu has authorized the deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State following a deadly assault by suspected terrorists on the communities of Nuku and Woro on Tuesday.
According to Rauf Ajakaye, chief press secretary to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the attack claimed the lives of 75 residents.
In a statement released Wednesday night, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu announced the new military command would lead “Operation Savannah Shield” to combat the terrorists and safeguard vulnerable communities.
Onanuga reported that the president condemned what he called a “cowardly and beastly attack,” characterizing the assailants as “heartless for choosing soft targets in their doomed campaign of terror.”
“President Tinubu expressed rage that the attackers killed the community members who rejected their obnoxious attempt at indoctrination, choosing instead to practice Islam that is neither extreme nor violent,” the statement said.
“It’s commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promoted violence over peace and dialogue.”
The presidential spokesperson added that Tinubu called for cooperation between federal and state authorities to assist affected residents and ensure accountability for those responsible for the violence.
“President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and condoled with those who lost family members. He also condoled with the people and the government of Kwara State,” Onanuga said.
